My office will always be a safe space.
I will cultivate diversity by creating a community that promotes mutual respect and acceptance. To accomplish this, I encourage open dialogue on diversity, equity, and inclusion. This will allow everyone to contribute to a discussion of what we (as a lab and individuals) can do better to be champions of inclusivity in our university and scientific community. To that end, I will expect my lab members to participate in inclusivity, ally, and safe space training through the University's DEI initiatives and the Center for the Integration of Research Teaching and Learning (cirtl.net). There are many great resources available for further information, guidance, or support. Here are a few:

Vision for the Ruhs Lab: Integrative approaches to understanding animal health
I envision creating a research program which integrates concepts from both eco-immunology and organismal physiology, to answer questions across levels of biological organization. By applying an integrative approach to tackling research questions, I see the potential for mentoring students with a wide-range of interests to inspire them to become informed, independent, critical-thinking scientists. My research group will be an inclusive and accepting environment that values opinions from each of its members. Finally, we will actively pursue open science by maintaining a repository of our code and findings as well as communicating our science to the broader public through local organizations and outreach events promoting STEM inclusivity, like the Audubon Society and Skype a Scientist.
